General Information for Hospital staff/Chaplain to Share with Families
Which is better, arranging for funeral services myself or appointing the funeral representative from my local mosque/Islamic center
It has been observed that when a Muslim patient dies, some family members have wanted to perform the burial arrangements (from obtaining all the required certificates to the burial ceremony) as their last loving deed to the deceased.
It has also been observed that having the funeral services arranged by the mosques, Islamic centers and funeral homes goes help give the grieving family more time with the deceased before the burial.
It has been further noted that the comprehensive funeral services costs negotiated by the mosques and Islamic centers with their affiliated funeral homes, mortuaries and cemeteries are more economical for families.

What do you need to do after the death of a Muslim family member
Immediately after the death.
The on-call chaplain will be paged to assist you.
If you know the name of the mortuary, sign the "Release of Human Remains" form presented by the on-call chaplain.
If you do not know the name of the mortuary, the mortuary you finally select can call the Spiritual Care Service office and fax a copy of the
release you have signed with them to the Spiritual Care Service Office.
The physician will begin the death certificate in the electronic record system. The chaplain or other staff member from the Spiritual Care
Service will prepare the Medical information portion of the death certificate, the certificate will be electronically transferred to the mortuary
selected by the family.
Contact the funeral representative of your local mosque or Islamic Center to arrange for Ghusl (washing), Kafan (shrouding) and Burial of
your loved one as soon as possible. (see links of masajid/mosques below). They will contact the funeral home that they have a working
relationship with. It will be the responsibility of the funeral home selected to file the death certificate unless other arrangements are made.
The funeral home will usually register the death certificate and obtain a burial permit. They will also arrange transport from the hospital to the funeral home/ghusl facility.
Ghusl (washing) and kafan (shrouding) for the deceased will be performed at the funeral home/ghusl facility.
The deceased will be transported to the masjid or Islamic center for the Janaza prayer (some funeral homes provide space for the Janaza
prayer if required).
The deceased will be transported to the burial cemetery - the death certificate will have to be filed and the permit will need to be issued before burial can proceed.
The deceased will then be buried.
